Our long citywide transportation nightmare is almost over, readers, as Wacker Drive is scheduled to finally reopen in full this week.

The ramp from Wacker to and from Congress Parkway is finished and set to open to traffic on Friday, Nov. 30, as well as the intersection of Van Buren and Wacker.

The move formally finishes the three-year-long process that saw the Eisenhower Expressway, Congress and Wacker all either partially or completely closed for resurfacing or replacement.

In the process, the project throttled traffic on three of Chicagoís major thoroughfares. The result was a huge number of cars searching for alternate routes through the heart of the city, clogging Roosevelt, Harrison and other surface roads in the process.

With the projectís official end, downtown traffic will be free of major projects for now. But the reconstruction of the Circle Interchange looms in the future.
