Police and protestors clashed en masse at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Cermak Road in the South Loop Sunday evening, after what had been a largely peaceful event.

The event began with a rally organized by the group Coalition Against NATO and G8's War and Poverty Agenda at Grant Parkís Petrillo Music Shell around noon Sunday, followed by a march through the South Loop to Michigan and Cermak. When they arrived around 4 p.m., a group of veterans made a show of returning their medals to NATOís generals by hurling them one by one towards McCormick Place.

But soon after the event culminated, police began to try flushing people out of the intersection to the west. Many were mounted on horses, and protestors did not take kindly to being pushed. Sign poles and water bottles began to fly, and soon after police began to arrest protestors.

In an attempt to get people to leave, police brought out their large speaker, the Long Range Acoustic Device or LRAD, a gadget capable of emitting a loud noise described as nonlethal. But as of 6:20 Sunday evening, police had only used it as a loudspeaker.

Protestors who would not leave the intersection were boxed in by police against the Papa Johnís storefront on the northwest corner of Cermak and Michigan, where they eventually lost a battle with police and were either forced out or arrested.

Thayer wasn't watching the live stream I saw, of protesters pushing into police lines, the Black Bloc with sticks et al. Sorry, but the points were made and there was no need to linger at Cermak and Mich. BTW Aaron's reporting is not fair-minded.

Why only pictures of confrontation? Where are pictures of peaceful marchers and the size of the march?
