Madison Vine Wines owners Gail and Tom Sproviero.

When it comes to wine, most of us aren’t as well-versed as Alpana Singh. So it helps to have a wine merchant you can trust to steer you in the right direction. The West Loop now has just that in Madison Vine Wines.

The three-month-old wine shop at 1340 W. Madison offers a complete selection of whites, reds and champagnes. There are also a variety of craft beers available. The stamped tin ceiling offers an old-world saloon vibe, and the tasting room in the rear gives shoppers an opportunity to try out new varieties, every Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Best of all, Madison Vine Wines is not snooty. A friendly Golden Retriever named Mia greets visitors, and it’s clear this is a dog-friendly environment. Look through the racks of wine and many have a tagged photo hanging on the bottles—they’re laminated photos of neighborhood dogs.

For holiday shopping, Gail and Tom Sproviero have several recommendations. The husband-and-wife owners of Madison Vine Wines showed me a huge book, which looked like an oversized Bible, and might well have been a popular gift during Prohibition. It contained no pages, just a cavity with three bottles of very good red wine.

“They’re all great Italian vintages,” Tom Sproviero said. “There’s a Trabuch Langhe 2007, a Fosco Diano D’Alba 2008 and a Gentilium Langhe Rosso 2007.”

The price for this Good Book: $199.99. Madison Vine Wines also offers custom-made wine baskets starting at $79.

You shoppers out there—on Black Friday, I’ll provide details on a couple of interesting only-in-West Loop holiday gift options.
