Santa Claus was on hand for the Marty Bartelme Park Christmas tree and Menorah lighting tonight.

Minnie (left) and Pita Schulte were dressed for the occasion. They were accompanied by their owners, Kim and Adam.

A balmy springlike evening helped draw a couple of hundred visitors to Mary Bartelme Park tonight for the second annual Christmas tree and Menorah lighting.

"Last year, it was brutally cold--about five degrees," said Armando Chacon, a member of the Bartelme Park Advisory Council. "We probably only had 25 people show up."

The mild weather and free pizza helped swell the crowd tonight. A line of kids stretched down the hill from the just-lit tree for a chance to have their pictures taken with Santa Claus.

Before the lighting, Christmas carols were provided by a talented group of students from Skinner School. Chacon thanked the park supporters and reminded them programs like the tree and Menorah lighting are funded by donations from neighborhood supporters, not the city.

The Bartelme Park Advisory Council and the West Loop Community Organization (WLCO) also held a toy and coat drive during the ceremony. West Loop residents who'd like to donate toys or coats to the drive should contact Martha Goldstein or Laura Benson at WLCO, by calling 312-666-1991.

Lidia, Thanks for coming last year. I wish you could have made it this year. It was amazing. I will do all I can to make it even better next year. Jen, I totally agree with you. I have been a proponent of taking ownership of our neighborhood. With all the great things going on in the west loop, it's still the people that make a great community. Getting together in large numbers for something like the tree lighting ceremony and other events makes me think we are on the right track.

We were one of those 25 who showed up last year—at least until I decided it was too cold to be outdoors with an infant! We were out of town and missed it this year, but it's nice to know this will be a regular event. This park has really become a wonderful way to bring the community together.

Ahh... the WL! Truly becoming one of the best neighborhoods to raise a family. People are so friendly & it's become a tight knit community. So many great restaurants, grocery stores, small independently-owned businesses, art galleries, transportation, parks, great schools, very ethnically diverse, kids/teens running around unsupervised without parents (a great sign) & living in the shadows of the Bulls & Hawks. People are buying west of Ashland on Warren & Washington & beyond to be in the WL.
