An off-duty police officer helped capture an alleged purse-snatcher at 1:50 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10 on West Wacker Drive, after police said he grabbed a purse from a woman at a food court at 200 N. Dearborn Ave.

The woman told police she was talking on her iPhone and eating lunch when she noticed the man and a woman walking back and forth in front of her. The woman then came up to her and asked her how to get to Wells Street. The woman told police she felt uncomfortable and placed her iPhone in her purse.

The two suspects then left but the woman came back five minutes later and as she was asking her another question, the victim saw someone run up behind her and snatch her purse. She starting yelling and chasing the suspect northbound on Dearborn and was joined by some pedestrians and security guards.

An off-duty police officer passing by saw the chase and parked his vehicle and also started in pursuit, catching the suspect at 55 W. Wacker Drive. Police charged an Elmwood Park man with theft. The woman he was with was not found.

This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 1st District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
