What is there to say about Pete’s Fresh Market at this point? The project has been marred with so many curveballs, delays and unfortunate incidents at this point that we wouldn’t be surprised if a satellite fell out of the sky and crashed smack dab in the middle of Madison and Western.

The incident with threatening mobs demanding a payout, though, is much more troubling than departmental ineptitude in the city of Chicago that delayed the project for years. That wasn’t malicious, at least.

Obviously, this incident speaks to the extreme dysfunction involved in doing business on the far end of the Near West Side. It calls back to the days when mafiosos would demand payment from businesses for “security,” lest anything bad happen to them.

This is obviously a much lower common denominator. These people seemed to be anything but organized.

The worst part about this, though, is that these people claimed to be representing the community.

You don’t represent the community. The community wants a grocery store on this corner, and has desperately needed one for years. The community wanted to see this store built yesterday, last year. The community has no time for thugs who knock down construction fences and steal car batteries in retaliation for “jobs.”

We live in America. If you want a job, go through the same process as everybody else. Turn in an application. Don’t just show up and ask for cash. No one owes it to you.

This is exactly the kind of incident that people fear when they think of doing business on the Near West Side — roving bands of thugs demanding their way. Lawlessness.

Pete’s, get a new security firm pronto and get started again. We can’t afford to wait any longer.
